*Content warning: discussion of domestic violence

Domestic violence is a scary circumstance to navigate. Here’s what to do if your boyfriend hits you.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence can be a pattern of behavior a partner uses to maintain control and power over their partner. Although domestic violence may be sexual, it can also include emotional and physical distress causing trauma to the survivor.

What to do if Your Boyfriend Hits You

The safest course of action is to leave the premises immediately and inform the authorities, if possible. One should document any visible injury (take pictures) and go to a hospital to verify all injuries (visible or not).

If the survivor chooses to file a police report, they should include the photos and hospital verification of injury.

A survivor can also consider separation. A partner should never resort to hitting someone they claim to love and it would be in the survivor’s best interest and safety to separate from their partner. The survivor should not stay in the same space as their partner until their angry “outburst” completely subsides before considering long-term separation plans (collecting valuables/moving). Please know resources are available to help during this challenging time.

One should gather as much evidence as possible and look up Domestic Violence statutes in their appropriate state.
