What is a California CCW Permit?

A CCW permit is a license that allows people to carry a concealed weapon. California allows any weapon concealed on the body to receive a CCW permit, such as a pistol. California CCW licenses are issued by County Sheriffs or Chiefs of local police departments. Counties may have different requirements and procedures regarding CCW licenses, but must follow California minimums.

California code issues permits to applicants of good moral character who complete a gun-training course and have good cause for the license. Background checks allow the state to determine whether an applicant is of good moral character.

California defines good cause for a CCW license as being when:

  1. There is a documented, present danger to applicant or their immediate family
  2. There is a specific, non-general danger to the applicant
  3. Existing law enforcement resources cannot adequately address the danger of harm
  4. The danger cannot reasonably be avoided by alternative measures, and
  5. Licensing will significantly reduce the danger of harm
